Race and Politics "Bleeding Kansas" And the Coming of the Civil War

I am approximately halfway through the book and I have found the book quite fascinating. The political wheeling and dealing is well written and interesting to read, although a bit hard to follow. To date the biggest surprise of the book has been the complicated beginnings of the Republican party and multi-party atmosphere of American politics into the 1850's. Any thoughts on this or other matters pertaining to the book would be greatly appreciated.
